MRS. GARDNER
Hello CSD!!! I am so excited to be joining the students, staff, and community at CSD this year! My name is Sandy Gardner and I have been in education now for 15 years and could not imagine doing anything else! I am a graduate from Penn State University in State College, PA. GO NITTANY LIONS! I graduated with a BS in Secondary Education Social Studies with a minor in Psychology. I have always been involved in service learning since high school and when I attended Penn State I was actively involved in the AT&T Service Leadership outreach program where I took fellow classmates out to participate in community service projects in the local area. In addition, I was a trained counselor at a women’s shelter for domestic violence. With my background in education and service learning, CSD and I were definitely a perfect fit!
What appealed to me the most about teaching at CSD was the focus on great teaching practices that were best for kids in all classes! I began teaching in New Hampshire at Pembroke Academy grades 9-12th. My courses included Social Sciences, American History, and Humanities. In addition I was the Drama Director for the school and put on dramas, comedies and musicals. I then moved to Raleigh, NC where I helped to open a now very successful charter school, Franklin Academy. While at FA I had the opportunity to teach 1st grade and then was asked to help develop the middle school program where I taught 6th-8th grade. This lead to many different teaching experiences such as World History, Geography, Language Arts, Writing, Resource, and Computers. I also became the Curriculum Specialist, Club Coordinator, Drama Club Advisor, Girls Basketball Coach, and founded a service learning club called Into the Streets! We then moved as a family to the Orlando, FL area where I taught in a magnet and public school while becoming a coach for Odyssey of the Mind. Furthermore, I began training teachers for an educational company, Thinking Maps, and presented at various educational conferences and schools around Florida and North Carolina.
We are very excited to be back in North Carolina, a state we truly feel is home! I look forward to a wonderful year with the 10th grade students in Civics & Economics as well as becoming a member of the team and community at CSD!!!
